My Latest book is Northumberland's Pilgrim Routes. Northumberland is synonymous with the Northern Saints: key among them the great trinity of St Cuthbert, St Oswald and St Aidan. Among the routes explored in this book are two long-distance pilgrim paths: St Cuthbert’s Way and St Oswald’s Way. The paths lead – respectively – to and from Holy Island, also known as Lindisfarne, a sacred place of international significance. Three other Northumbrian saints also feature: St Wilfred, whose St Wilfrid’s Way runs north from Hexham; St Paulinus, another great evangelist; and St Bede. It is thanks to Bede that we know so much about the other Northern Saints. Bede wrote the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, which gives detailed accounts of their lives, and places them in the context of a period that has become known as the Golden Age of Saints. This book brings all Northumberland's main pilgrim routes together in one place, and explores them in great detail. A companion website offers gpx route maps you can download and follow on your phone. Northumberland's Pilgrim Routes joins my other titles: Norfolk's Pilgrim Routes; Kent's Pilgrim Routes; London to Walsingham Camino; and Pilgrim Pathways.
