The starting point for The Strategic Career was my experience as a business strategy consultant. In my 23 years at McKinsey & Company, I helped clients assess big strategy decisions and led the firm's Strategy Practice. We pioneered new ways to help develop strategy - for example, game theory and uncertainty management, two concepts that now help people develop winning career strategies. After leaving McKinsey, I taught business strategy classes at Yale, my students frequently asked for career advice, and I used the same business concepts to help guide their careers. I began using the same approach with more experienced mid-career managers and executives. The success of those conversations led me to create a Career Strategy course. I taught it at Yale and now teach it at Rice. My strategy background, my counseling experience, and my teaching are the foundation to The Strategic Career.
