Brian Claman is a Canadian author and independent publisher whose work focuses on history, memory, risk, and the experiences of people whose lives have been shaped by the Holocaust, war, displacement, and rebuilding.
He is the author of Taken. Numbered. Survived., which tells the story of his mother, Holocaust survivor Mary Katz Claman, and When Is It Too Late? Holocaust Lessons on Risk, Decision Making, and the Failure to Act, which examines the safety and security concerns facing Jewish communities in Canada and other Western democracies in a post–October 7 world. Drawing on lessons from the Holocaust, particularly the destruction of Hungarian Jewry in 1944, the book considers how warning signs are recognized, dismissed, normalized, or acted upon, and what history can teach us about responding to emerging threats before opportunities for meaningful action are lost.
His third book, The Closed Door: Canada, the Jews, and the Cost of Looking Away, is scheduled for publication in spring 2027.
Through Brian Claman Publishing, he produces historically grounded narrative nonfiction drawing on survivor testimony, archival records, historical research, and documented personal experience.
Claman’s work is strongly influenced by his family history and by his commitment to preserving the stories of those who endured some of the most destructive events of the twentieth century. His writing places individual experiences within their broader historical context while examining what the past can teach us about memory, decision-making, risk, responsibility, and the consequences of institutional inaction.
