There comes a point in everyone’s life when a choice has to be made, a choice that defines who we are and what we stand for. For me, Christopher M. Zimmitt, that moment came in the most unexpected of places: behind prison walls. But let’s start a little earlier, with a decision shaped by loyalty, love, and an unbreakable bond with my uncle. He wasn’t just family; he was a mentor, a moral compass, and a constant source of wisdom in a life that often felt like it was spinning out of control.
When things fell apart, I knew I could have chosen an easier path, a path that could have spared me the weight of sacrifice. But loyalty ran deep, and I couldn’t turn my back on the values that was instilled in me. Even on our darkest days, he promised to do whatever it took to see me come home from prison. From the second day we spent behind those walls, he made it clear: his mission was to get me out and get me back home with the family as fast as possible.
I knew that prison was a possibility, given the path I’d been on, and I never expected anyone to understand or justify my choices. I didn’t feel I owed anyone explanations or apologies. All I knew was that I needed to endure, to learn, and to come home with a renewed sense of purpose.
During my time behind bars, I worked to reshape my path, completing the RDAP program and even stepping up to teach others in the GED program. These experiences became a part of my own journey, proof that even in confinement, there’s space to grow, to change, and to make a difference.
This book is my story, a raw and unfiltered account of choices, consequences, and the unshakable power of loyalty. My hope is that by putting it down on paper, someone else can find strength in these pages. Maybe it will inspire someone to look at life a little differently, to make a choice that leads them down a better path, or at the very least, to understand the power of the roads we choose.
