What were your favorite foods as a child? Holidays? Traditions? What recipe brings your family to the table today? Curiosity compelled Carole Bumpus, a U.S. retired family therapist, to travel abroad researching the needs and desires of families in other countries. Knowing that family stories unfold around the dinner table, she focused on favorite and traditional foods as she interviewed over seventy-five families in both Italy and France. But what most surprised her were the amazing stories told by women who had held their families together during wartime. Her historical novel, A Cup of Redemption, based on the life of a French friend’s mother during WWII, was published in October 2014. Recipes for Redemption, the Companion Cookbook to a Cup of Redemption followed in August 2015. Gathering her remaining interviews, she launched her Savoring the Olde Ways Series with Book One, Searching for Family and Traditions at the French Table published in 2019, Book Two (of the same name) came out in 2020. The third book, A September to Remember: Searching for Culinary Pleasures at the Italian Table, was published in 2021 and the fourth book, Adventures on Land & Sea: Searching for Culinary Pleasures in Provençe and along the Côte d’ Azur arrived in November 2024. Her keen desire to discover yet another family story keeps her on the road. When not traveling, you can find Bumpus living and loving family and friends in the San Francisco Bay Area where she enjoys sailing, whale watching or sitting on a favorite beach.
