The story of THE CONFESSIONAL began first in Croatia marveling at the old confession booths. My imagination went wild, and I spent the rest of that vacation scribbling on any scrap of paper I could find. The story didn't fully come together, however, until a few years later when I stood in the Plaza de Mayo of Buenos Aires and watched kerchiefed women march in an attempt to be reunited with their children stolen from them during the Dirty War of Argentina (1976-83).
I was so moved by their experience, the rest of The Confessional developed smoothly. At times during the writing, I felt the presence of those women urging me on. I knew I needed to portray that time period accurately, so with the help of an archivist, I researched those horrific years until I was satisfied I understood it as well as an outsider could.
The heart of the book is not about war. More compelling to me are the relationships formed by women united by mere threads.
