My name is Daniel Brown, and I’m a dark fantasy author based in Salford, England. The Last Thread of Lightning is the first full novel I’ve ever written, and completing it has been one of the most transformative experiences of my life. I’ve always been drawn to stories that blend atmospheric worlds with raw emotional truth, tales where magic reflects the inner battles we fight, and where characters are allowed to be vulnerable, flawed, and achingly human. This book grew from that desire to write fantasy that feels both epic and intimate, a story where the supernatural mirrors the struggles many of us carry quietly.
My own journey with mental health has shaped the way I write and the stories I want to tell. For years, I wrestled with the feeling of being “too much”, too emotional, too anxious, too overwhelmed, and writing became the place where I could make sense of those feelings. Through storytelling, I found a way to turn chaos into meaning, to explore the parts of myself I once feared, and to give voice to experiences that are often difficult to articulate. Aren’s unstable magic is deeply personal to me; it reflects the unpredictable, powerful, and sometimes frightening nature of living with mental health challenges. Kael’s unwavering loyalty represents the people who stood by me when I couldn’t stand alone.
Finishing my first full novel has shown me that the stories I once kept inside myself deserve to be told. I want to be a published author because stories saved me, and I want to write the kind of books that might save someone else, or at least make them feel seen. I write to give queer characters the epic narratives they deserve, to show that love can be powerful and world‑changing, and to remind readers that even in the darkest moments, there is always a thread of lightning waiting to be found.
