David Emmanuel Goatley is Associate Dean for Academic and Vocational Formation, Ruth W. and A. Morris Williams, Jr. Research Professor of Theology and Christian Ministry, and Director of the Office of Black Church Studies at Duke Divinity School. Having been an urban missionary, congregational pastor, theological educator, and global missions executive, he is enaged in national justice advocacy and global ecumenism. Goatley earned degrees from the University of Louisville and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. In addition to journal articles, book chapters, and online essays, Dr. Goatley is the author of Were You There?: Godforsakenness in Slave Religion (Orbis Books, 1996; Augsburg Fortress Press, 2008; Wipf & Stock, 2021) and A Divine Assignment: The Missiology of Wendell Clay Somerville (Lucas Parks Books, 2010); editor of Black Religion, Black Theology: Selected Writings of J. Deotis Roberts (Trinity Press International, 2003); and co-executive producer and host of the podcast, Pilgrimages of Striving and Thriving.
