David K. Israel is a novelist and composer whose work moves fluidly between literature, music, dance, and film—sometimes all at once. His fiction is informed by decades spent inside the artistic worlds he writes about, where inspiration and ego tend to share the same dressing room.

His debut novel, Behind Everyman (Random House), was published internationally in 2005. His more recent novel, The Lost Mozart, draws on his long immersion in classical music to explore ambition, authorship, and the peculiar afterlife of genius.

A graduate of the Hartt College of Music, Israel studied composition as a teenager with jazz guitarist Pat Martino, with whom he later co-wrote and recorded an album. He went on to work as an editor for Leonard Bernstein, producing definitive editions of scores including West Side Story, On the Town, and Mass.

As a composer, he received his first commission from Paul Taylor in 1996. Their collaboration, The Word, premiered at New York City Center and has since been performed widely in the United States and abroad. He has also written for choreographers including Twyla Tharp, Jannie Taylor, and Gianna Reisen, and for companies such as the New York City Ballet and the Vail Dance Festival.

In addition to his novels and musical works, Israel has written for film and television and was a contributor to the Los Angeles Times Magazine and NPR’s Ask Me Another.
