…She returns with two stools. She is wearing a colorful patterned pagna and a similar one is arranged around her head. She stops where I am standing in the shade, puts the stools down, squats to sit on one and motions with her head for me to take the other. Facing me, she looks directly into my eyes and takes my hands in her own…
Deborah A. Hahn has led a double life. She sang with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus for many years and was a frequent opera and music theater chorus member with some solo roles along the way. She supported her mostly volunteer music career by working in biopharmaceutical clinical research administration and data auditing in academia and industry. She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Humanities and Music from the University of California, Berkeley.
Extensive travels in Europe and North Africa inspired her to join the Peace Corps in her mid-twenties. She began writing a memoir nearly twenty years later. In it she describes life-changing experiences, but the centerpiece is based on her diary while in Africa and letters home during those years. It was not until she became a cancer survivor in her mid-fifties that she had the perspective to finish her memoir, bring her grandmother’s fascinating story to life, and write this book.
She lives with her husband in Northern California.
