Emily Briars’ path hasn’t been linear—something that’s made for an interesting and varied life. From living and working in the south of France to qualifying as a solicitor at a London law firm and running her own business, she has always been fascinated by people: how we think, how we relate to one another, and how we navigate the unexpected turns life takes.

After experiencing the devastating loss of her husband, her writing turned towards the things that sustain us through difficulty: mindset, meaning, resilience and the power of perspective. Drawing on both philosophy and personal experience, her book Steady in the Storm was inspired by her grandmother’s firm but loving wisdom: “It is, and that’s an end of it. Now what are you going to do?”

More recently, Emily has turned her attention to fiction—with the help of two rescue cats, Burt and Ellie. Through their distinctly feline view of the baffling behaviour of humans, her writing explores relationships, belonging and the absurdities of everyday life with warmth and humour. Beneath the comedy, however, lie many of the same questions that run through her other work: how we understand ourselves and one another, what makes a life meaningful, and whether there might sometimes be a better way to live.

Whether writing philosophy or fiction, Emily is interested in the same thing: what it means to be human—although, increasingly, she suspects the cats may have some of the answers...
