Frances writes historical fiction featuring strong, likeable and often quirky characters, from 'court dwarf' Nat Davy in The Smallest Man, to eccentric bonesetter Endurance Proudfoot in That Bonesetter Woman, and would-be footballer Minnie Newton in The Scandalous Ladies Football Club. Vividly atmospheric and meticulously researched, her novels are often based on true stories, and take the reader to times and places in the past, without ever hitting them over the head with heavy historical detail - which is why they've been called 'historical fiction for people who didn't know they liked historical fiction.'
Frances grew up in Forest Gate, East London, and wrote her first 'novel' aged 7, about a squirrel with a liking for pork chops. After a career in journalism, her first published novel, The Smallest Man, came out in 2021, followed by That Bonesetter Woman, The Lost Passenger and The Scandalous Ladies Football Club. She lives in Brighton, with her husband and three very spoilt Tonkinese cats.
