Gary F. Bengier was eBay's Chief Financial Officer, leading the company's initial and secondary public offerings. After a 25-year career in Silicon Valley, engaged in multiple technologies, he went back to school to study physics and philosophy. He then earned an MA in philosophy and turned to speculative fiction, writing novels about what happens to human purpose when machines do most of the work.
His first novel, Unfettered Journey, follows an AI scientist trying to build true machine consciousness in the stratified, post-work society of 2161. It is a philosophical adventure and a love story, engaging seriously with the philosophy of mind — and, beneath the surface, an allegory of Adam and Eve.
Its prequel, Journey to 2125, is a multigenerational family saga spanning 2033 to 2125. Four generations of one family live through automation, climate disruption, and the question of what a life means when having a job becomes a privilege rather than an expectation.
Both novels take a strict hard-science approach — no faster-than-light travel, no magic — while keeping the human questions at the center. Together they have won over twenty book awards, including an Eric Hoffer Grand Prize short-list placement and a Publishers Weekly BookLife Editor's Pick.
