Helen Edward is the author of The Pond and The Bridge, two rhyming picture books inspired by real community events in south-west London.
In April 2001, a million gallons of water disappeared overnight from Barnes Village Pond. In April 2019, Hammersmith Bridge closed suddenly and remains shut years later. Seeing these moments of disruption and recovery through the eyes of her two young daughters inspired Helen to recreate their world in verse - capturing how children experience change, waiting and hope.
Influenced by the rhythmic storytelling of Julia Donaldson, and written during precious family reading time, these books celebrate place, belonging and the power of communities to come together.
Helen studied English and Philosophy and later completed a Marketing Diploma and an MBA - and trained as a teacher. She has worked in business, education and the charity sector, including with City Harvest, The Children’s Trust, Home-Start, Kingston Charitable Foundation and Barnes Community Association, and has served on school and hospital boards. Her work continues to span community, charity and public life.
When she’s not writing or reading aloud, Helen can usually be found dog-walking in Richmond Park - or visiting one of her husband’s pubs.
