Heyward Coleman is a former submarine officer in the U.S. Nuclear Navy with a Master’s in Nuclear Physics from Duke University and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. Throughout a career that spanned the oil shipping industry and the founding of an environmental radiochemistry laboratory, he remained driven by a dual passion for technical innovation and maritime adventure.
He is the author of the two-part series, "The Voyages of Skimmer." The first volume, "Where the Wind Blows," recounts the 1989 family sabbatical that transformed a career-driven executive and his family into a seasoned crew in the Mediterranean. The sequel, "The Next Port," follows his subsequent five-year circumnavigation—a journey defined by technical resilience and the invention of the "Caliban" autopilot.
Engineered mid-Pacific by his son, Alex, using a Rule bilge pump, bungee cords, and various components from the extensive cache of spare parts Heyward amassed during the boat's rebuild, Caliban became a defining symbol of the family’s resourcefulness at sea.
Following his return to shore, Heyward’s professional journey came full circle. He founded a medical simulation company that secured a global contract with the Department of Defense to install emergency OBGYN training in all fifty of their worldwide maternal hospitals. He also co-founded Viewpoint Molecular, which later merged into Perspective Therapeutics, Inc.—a biotechnology firm now in Stage 1/2 clinical trials for two cancer treatment drugs using nuclear medicine.
Today, Heyward lives in Charleston, South Carolina. While his ocean-crossing days are behind him, he and his wife, Charlotte, spend several months each year navigating the inland waterways of Europe aboard their powerboat, "Magnolia"—proving that for a true sailor, the journey never truly ends.
