Justin Ryan Carver writes horror, hard science fiction, and literary thrillers — books about ordinary people who meet a thing that shouldn't exist and have to decide, out loud, who they are.
He is the author of The Good News, The Usual, The Brood, The Autopilot, and THE RECORD: A Novel of Nineteen Days. His fiction crosses genres without much respect for the fences between them: a cicada brood that learned to feed on blood, a man on death row writing down the days he can't account for, a small town that gets exactly what it was promised. The violence tends to happen off the page. The dread doesn't.
He served as a Non-Commissioned Officer in the United States Army and spent six years teaching logic, philosophy, and ethics at a community college in Southern Illinois — which is most of the explanation for why his books keep asking what a decent person owes, and what it costs them to pay it. He also writes nonfiction about leadership and resilience, including The Lost ARC, Sisyphus.gov, and Quiet Strength.
He lives in Du Quoin, Southern Illinois, in the river country where four states and one overdue fault line all cross under the same fields.
