Jack Sanders is the pen name of author Christian Schirmer. Under this name, he writes crime novels and thrillers defined by powerful settings—ranging from the shadowy heights of the Black Forest to the quiet lakes of Schleswig-Holstein and the rugged islands of the North Sea. His stories combine investigative tension with psychological depth and characters who carry sharp edges—and secrets.
Sanders became widely known through the Black Forest series “Winter und Berg – Die Ermittler von Freudenstadt”, in which Chief Inspector Ben Winter and Detective Chief Inspector Lena Berg solve complex cases in and around Freudenstadt—now spanning multiple novels, including a short story.
With the Northern German cold-case series “Seezeichen”, Sanders shifts the suspense to the lake district around Plön. Investigators Svea Johannsen and Fenja Stein reopen missing-person and murder cases, while the region’s past repeatedly pushes its way into the present. The series has grown to eight cases, complemented by additional short fiction and collected editions. The first book, “Seezeichen – Vergessenes Ufer”, is also available as an audiobook.
A striking change of perspective comes with “Ebbe & Schuld”: island crime stories told from the perpetrator’s point of view—morally grey, atmospheric, and shaped by the relentless rhythm of the tides. With “Deister Crimes”, Sanders expands his crime universe to the Wennigser Mark near Hanover, following an investigative team through cases such as “Brandnarben” and “Grundwasser”.
Whether set in the Black Forest or on the coast, told through an investigator’s eyes or from the offender’s perspective, Jack Sanders stands for suspense with atmosphere, psychological intensity, and the lingering sense that behind every façade lies a second truth.
