I'm Jacob Barnes, and I write crime fiction that focuses on real-life noir. I write about the weight of the badge and people trying to do whatever it takes when the odds are stacked against them.
I have a background in law enforcement. While I keep my career and authorship separate, the day job is what keeps my writing honest. I know the reality of a crime scene, the red tape of the job, and the specific kind of dark, sometimes juvenile humor it takes to survive a rough shift. I bring that reality to the page, but the procedural details are just the foundation.
My stories deal with heavy themes—corruption, murder, conspiracy—but I have no interest in writing pure misery. To me, the best part of any mystery isn't just catching the killer or solving other people's problems. It's watching the characters rely on each other, trade a few jokes to cut the tension, and find a reason to keep fighting for justice.
While I enjoy many genres, police thrillers are what I live and breathe every day. Most of what I do off the page might not be interesting, but what I bring to the page is. Because real noir isn't about rain and crime scenes. It's about the often broken characters that inhabit that world, and what the hero does to save it.
