I am a citizen of three continents, born in the Netherlands, educated in Canada and resident in Hong Kong for almost fifty years. By trade I am a journalist, having written a daily column for Hong Kong's South China Morning Post for twenty years on finance and investment matters. Earlier I worked as an Asian investment analyst for, among others, Morgan Stanley Asia and ABN Amro. I have now retired from active employment but find my days easily as busy in writing fiction instead of on current events and in making detailed scale models of old sailing ships, exploring Hong Kong's glorious green hillsides and being tolerated by my grandchildren.
My books focus on an exploration through fiction of two themes. (1) I am an apostate. I previously believed Christianity's story of of the resurrection and divinity of Jesus but I now reject it as false. This story, however, still lies deeply at the heart of many cultures across the world and it has perverse as well as beneficial effects on the human condition. (2) I believe we are outgrowing our planet and, even in the near term, the future of the human race lies in Space in colonies that we ourselves construct.
