Dr. James P. McGarvey | Bestselling Author, Speaker, and Leadership Educator
Dr. James P. McGarvey has dedicated much of his life to serving others through ministry, public safety, education, and organizational leadership. With more than 30 years of experience in public safety and over 20 years serving in church safety and security leadership, he brings a unique perspective that combines practical experience, biblical principles, and a passion for developing servant leaders.
Throughout his public safety career, Dr. McGarvey has served in numerous capacities, including EMS Dispatcher, Firefighter, Emergency Medical Technician, First Responder Instructor, Disaster Chaplain, and Volunteer Officer with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. His commitment to Christian ministry has been equally significant. Over the years, he has served as a Youth Pastor, Associate Pastor, Church Safety Director, and in numerous other church leadership positions. In 2018, recognizing a growing need for a more ministry-centered approach to church safety and security, he founded *The Church Safety Guys*, an organization dedicated to helping churches prepare for the unexpected while remaining focused on their biblical mission.
Dr. McGarvey believes that church safety and security is much more than standing guard, managing emergencies, or protecting facilities. It is a ministry built upon relationships, servant leadership, discipleship, and a genuine commitment to caring for others. His philosophy of **"Ministry First, Safety Second"** emphasizes that effective church safety teams must support the mission and vision of the local church while creating an environment where people can worship, grow, and serve with confidence.
Professionally, Dr. McGarvey serves as an analyst and program manager with the United States Department of Defense, where his work includes organizational development, change management, employee engagement, and workplace culture. His experience in both government and ministry has strengthened his understanding of how leadership, communication, and organizational culture influence the effectiveness of teams and the people they serve.
In addition to his professional responsibilities, Dr. McGarvey has taught leadership, marketing, logistics, economics, and business-related courses for several colleges throughout the United States. Whether speaking to church leaders, public safety professionals, or ministry volunteers, his goal remains the same: to help people become better prepared, more effective leaders, and more intentional servants of others.
Dr. McGarvey resides in Columbus, Ohio, with his family. He continues to serve his community as a police chaplain and as a board member of the Ohio Crime Prevention Association. Outside of his professional and ministry responsibilities, he enjoys writing, teaching, speaking, serving in his local church, and spending time with his family.
