James McGarvey, Ph.D, has served as a Church Safety Director in Columbus, Ohio for over fifteen years. Previously to that, he spent 25 years in Public Safety working as an EMS Dispatcher, Firefighter, EMT, First Responder Instructor, Disaster Chaplain, and Volunteer Officer for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Dept. With a heart for serving the Lord and the local community, through the years, he has served in roles as Youth Pastor, Associate Pastor, and many other church leadership roles. In 2016 he started the non-profit, The Church Safety Guys, because he felt that there was little ministry focus in training and disciplining within church safety. That began a remarkable journey to help churches be better prepared for the unexpected.
Church safety and security is a new place of worship ministry; its not just about standing guard, but it’s about having a ministry first attitude and supporting the mission and vision of the church.
Currently, James works for the U.S. Defense Department. Over the years, he has had the opportunity to teach leadership, marketing, logistics, and economics for several colleges in the U.S. and has served on several curriculum development boards extensively developing leadership, business, and management materials. He has a Bachelor of Science in Bible and Computer Systems Management from Emmaus Bible College, Dubuque, Iowa, a Masters Degree in Business and Marketing from Grand Canyon University, Phoenix, Arizona, and received his PhD from Centurion Bible College in Religion, with an emphasis in Organizational Leadership. He enjoys serving on the Elder board of his local church and spending time with his family.
He has authored several books for church safety and security ministries, as well as church ministry, including the Amazon best sellers: The Case for Church Safety & Security and Coming Back! He enjoys writing, speaking and teaching practical leadership concepts in servant leadership.
