Anthony Award-nominated, National Indie Excellence and PSWA Award Winner James T. Bartlett is originally from London, but has been living in Los Angeles for over 20 years.
His new book on History Press, "True Crime Burbank", looks at historical crimes cases in the city known for its movie studios and aviation. It features unsolved murders, two women sentenced to death, serial killers, and other kidnaps, robberies, shootings and strange crimes. "Beautiful downtown Burbank," as Johnny Carson used to say, this is most definitely not.
As a travel/lifestyle journalist and historian, he has written for the Los Angeles Times, BBC, NPR, Los Angeles Magazine, LA Daily News, ALTA California, High Life, Hemispheres, Westways, Frommers, nonstoplife, Northwest Travel & Life, Crime Reads, American Way, Atlas Obscura, The Guardian, Daily Mirror, Variety, Tolucan Times, Irish Herald and Bizarre, among others.
In 2012 he published "Gourmet Ghosts – Los Angeles", an alternative guide to the history and ghost stories behind some of the city’s oldest bars, restaurants and hotels. 2016 sequel "Gourmet Ghosts 2" focused on true crimes that took place at more of L.A.’s notable locations and eateries.
His 2023 true crime book "The Alaskan Blonde" interviewed witnesses and reexamined the FBI and police files into the unsolved 1953 murder of businessman Cecil Wells in Fairbanks, Alaska. His wife Diane Wells was charged with the crime alongside her alleged lover, black musician Johnny Warren - this affair made the case a media sensation, and it was covered by Time, Newsweek, Ebony, Jet and the pulp magazines. But who really pulled the trigger that cold October morning?
