Jeffrey Holden is the 2026 Notable Books of Michigan award-winning author of Dead Moose on Isle Royale: Off Trail with the Citizen Scientists of the Wolf-Moose Project.
Jeffrey's first backpacking trip was in 1976 when he and 2 friends hiked in the Smoky Mountains with external frame packs, clunky gear, cotton clothing, all in tennis shoes. They experienced 16 separate thunderstorms in 8 days, were constantly wet, had several black bear encounters, and learned to hate dried apricots. They called it the grueling ordeal. And Jeffrey loved it (Type 2 fun) and has been hiking ever since.
In 1977 Jeffrey first backpacked Isle Royale. Since 2002 he’s been supporting the Wolf-Moose Project on Isle Royale. For over 20 years he has been leading groups of volunteers off-trail searching for moose bones with Moosewatch. The Wolf-Moose Project is the world’s longest running predator-prey study based on Isle Royale.
Jeffrey has spent most of his professional career as a healthcare data guy in southeast Michigan where he lives with his wife Sandra and a clowder of cats. He has degrees from Michigan State University and the University of Michigan.
Jeffrey is the President of the Wolf-Moose Foundation, the fund-raising arm the Wolf-Moose Project. If you would like to support the research of the Wolf-Moose Project, or you have questions, please contact Jeffrey through the Foundation's website, wolfmoosefoundation. org.
