Jim L. Dobbins spent much of his life working in funeral service, helping families through some of the hardest moments they would ever face. Over the years, he worked as a funeral director and embalmer in both Michigan and South Carolina, owned a cremation-focused funeral home, and served on disaster response teams through FEMA’s DMORT program. The work exposed him to heartbreak, humor, tragedy, and humanity in ways few people ever experience firsthand.
But somewhere along the way, constant exposure to death began teaching him something unexpected about life. After years spent watching families say goodbye, Dobbins developed a deeper appreciation for ordinary moments, meaningful relationships, and the importance of slowing down long enough to actually live. Influenced by the simple, reflective philosophies of Henry David Thoreau, he came to believe that a meaningful life is often found far away from the noise, pressure, and constant rush of the modern world.
Today, he lives in Michigan, where he enjoys spending time outdoors, gardening, being near Lake Superior, and appreciating the quieter parts of life that once might have gone unnoticed. Whether he’s working in the yard, walking through the woods, or sitting around a campfire with family and friends, he believes the best parts of life are often the simplest ones.
The Business of Goodbye is his first book.
