Jim Stavis has spent much of his life learning what it means to keep going when the future is uncertain. Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at seventeen and told he might not live to fifty, he went on to build a family, found Paragon Steel in Southern California, and survive a heart and kidney transplant followed by a pancreas transplant.
His story is also connected to Brice Fabing, the seventeen-year-old donor whose gift made Jim’s second life possible. Over the years, Jim and Brice’s family have built a relationship grounded in gratitude, grief, and the extraordinary human connection at the heart of organ donation.
Jim wrote and produced Source of Hope, an award-winning short documentary about that journey. His memoir, When Hope Is Your Only Option, was substantially revised after he became caregiver to his wife, Renee, during her battle with ovarian cancer and following her death in 2024.
Today, Jim speaks about resilience, caregiving, leadership, organ donation, and the everyday work of choosing hope—not as a slogan, but as something people do when life does not go as planned.
