"Jim Yoakum's fictional writing is both an observation and depiction of the seemingly banal absurdities of life; most aspects of which have the potential to be ridiculous, monumental, awkward, funny, tragic, fragile, profound, and meaningless all at once. In his novels, his characters seem to know more but feel less, and as catastrophes become assumptions and then certainties, they respond to suffering and crisis with laughter, and a lightness of being. His work captures the beauty and uncanniness of singular, apparently trivial, moments where character is revealed through the humor and tragedy that is in us all, as well as life's grandeur, and the frailty of humanity." - Colophon Quarterly
