John Julius Reel moved from Staten Island, New York to Seville, Spain in 2005. In 2014, his memoir ¿QUÉ PINTO YO AQUÍ (Where do I fit in?) was published by Editorial Confluencias in Almería, Spain. MY HALF ORANGE: A STORY OF LOVE AND LANGUAGE IN SEVILLE, published by Tortoise Books in Chicago, is his first book in English. He currently participates in various tertulias on Canal Sur Radio (Andalusian public radio), has dabbled in acting, most notably in Nonio Parejo’s feature film 6 TOREROS YANKEES 6, and has published over 100 articles in Spanish newspapers like Diario de Sevilla, La Opinión de Málaga, and El Mundo. His YouTube channel/Facebook page SPANGLISH IN A MINUTE is steadily approaching 100,000 followers. He also passionately reviews memoirs on his YouTube channel BOOK RANTS. He loves the U.S., but doubts that he'll ever leave Seville, where he lives with his Sevillian wife and two bicultural, bilingual sons.
