My new book Tom Petty And Me traces the careers of Jon Scott and Tom Petty. Tom's label was about to drop him because of lack of sales when it was released in 1976. Eight months later, Jon Scott went to work at ABC Records as Head of National Album Promotion and accidentally picked up the overlooked album and went on to save the band. Jon worked with Tom for the next 40 years. At Tom's last concert at The Hollywood Bowl, he stopped the show and dedicated "I Won't Back Down" to Jon as a thank you for saving his dedication and passion for the band. One week later Tom died of cardiac arrest. It was a loss of an American Treasure, and Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers are considered one of the most iconic rock and roll bands in the world!
