In the short time since the release of his debut novel Getting Off Jonathan Reiss has been called “A writer for the new generation” and garnered extensive coverage from literary outlets, celebrities and adult film stars alike. Portions of the novel have already been serialized in NY Tyrant and Evergreen Review and the book has been touted by veteran novelists and tastemakers like Giancarlo DiTrapano and Scott McClannahan who called Reiss “A rocket-ship of a writer.” Getting Off has thus far received 5 out of 5 stars from LitReactor and a 9/10 from Culture Vulture. Reiss has published stories in Spin Magazine, The New York Observer, Interview, Vice, Complex, The Source, Tablet and many more. His recent non-fiction story about a high school crush turned America’s Most Wanted fugitive at Narratively garnered viral status, one of the most read stories on the popular personal essay website, Narratively. His first screenplay Companion sold earlier this year and his second scripted project “The Gangstalker” is currently in development at Adaptive Studios. Reiss began his career covering Manhattan’s Nightlife scene for the alt-weekly NY Press, turning the column into personal romp about the woes of a young party reporter with social anxiety bothering celebs for pithy quotes about inane parties in order to steal free food. He then became the arts and culture editor for Jewcy, covering Jewish film, food, theater and music. He then moved on to reporting full-time for Complex Magazine, RapGrid and The Source, covering hip-hop and the battle rap world. His first non-fiction book “Look At Me!: The XXXTENTACION Story” is being published by Hachette in June 2020.
