Education and entrepreneurship have formed the foundation of my career. I graduated from Pomona College with a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and then I lived in the former Soviet Union throughout the 1990s. During the six years I lived in St. Petersburg, Russia, I worked for a nonprofit microenterprise development program. We supported Russia’s aspiring new small business owners with training, loans, and an apparel-focused business incubator. I also lived in Moscow for two years, where I helped establish a world-class graduate school in economics. I speak Russian fluently. I returned home to California in 2000 and enrolled at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. After graduating with my MBA in 2002, I went to work in one of the Bay Area’s lower income communities teaching entrepreneurship. I’ve been married to my husband, a sculptor, since 1997 and together we operate a small business that provides custom stone work (www.CustomStoneCarving.com). We live with our teenage daughter not far from Stanford University in Northern California. In my free time I enjoy writing, reading in the hammock with a cat on my lap, hiking, and adventure travel when possible. I’ve been baptized both Catholic and Mormon, though now my relationship with the Divine is strictly personal (not institutional).
