Lenny Harvey is an eighty-three-year-old British author whose writing draws heavily upon a lifetime of real-world experience, Romany heritage, travel, hardship, and working-class life. Raised among Romany families in North London during and after the Second World War, Harvey spent his early years travelling, hop picking, flower selling, and working in the scrap metal trade. At the age of fifteen, he went to sea as a cabin boy, beginning a life of travel, hardship, and adventure. By seventeen he was back on land and once again working in the scrap trade, experiences that would later shape the authenticity and realism of his writing. Harvey’s books include Romany Gypsies, Forbidden Love, The Devil’s Gypsies, and the historical-fiction series Outcasts of Empire, inspired by the brutal world of the Second Boer War and Edwardian Britain. His writing is noted for its honesty, realism, strong characters, and authentic portrayal of Romany and working-class life. Robert Dawson, President of the RTFHS and author of almost one hundred Romani and Traveller books, praised Harvey’s work, writing: “That’s how realistic and authentic Lenny Harvey’s book is — so spot on, so accurate, so as it was. He takes you right there… I couldn’t put it down.” Dawson later described Harvey’s writing as: “A book which tells it as it was. Honestly, warts and all.” Lenny Harvey lives in England with his wife Lynne. The couple have been married for more than sixty-four years.
