Lourdes Fasani was born in Marianao, Cuba, and came to the United States as a third-grade student following the Cuban Revolution. As the only non-English-speaking student in her third-grade classroom in Hinsdale, Illinois, she experienced firsthand the challenges and discoveries that come with learning a new language, adapting to a new culture, and finding a sense of belonging in a new community.

After four years in the Midwest, her family moved to Southern California, where she continued her education. Lourdes graduated from the University of Southern California and became a bilingual teacher for English learners in the Los Angeles Unified School District. She later worked in various administrative roles within the school district.

Her personal experience as an immigrant child and her professional work with English learners have shaped her passion for sharing stories that encourage children to appreciate different cultures, embrace new experiences, and understand the importance of family, kindness, resilience, and community.

Through the Luli series, Lourdes draws on childhood experiences to introduce young readers to the world through the eyes of a Cuban immigrant child discovering life in America.
