MJ Surrena is the author and illustrator of The Cats of Old San Juan, a five-book illustrated adventure series for middle-grade readers set in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The first book, The Pirate's Revenge, features 20+ original hand-drawn illustrations by Surrena and follows an orange kitten named Campeón and his friends as they battle a time-traveling pirate captain threatening to conquer El Morro.
Monica received her BA from the University of Pittsburgh in Film, Latin, and Medieval & Renaissance Studies, and her MFA from USC Film School. Her comedic feature screenplay, KING OF THE ROAD, received the Grand Prize at the New England Women in Film Screenwriting Competition and screened at three national film festivals. She moved to Puerto Rico in 2023, where the real free-roaming cats of Old San Juan inspired her series.
