About Michael S. Piraino
Michael S. Piraino is a nationally recognized child-advocacy leader, trauma-informed practitioner, and author whose career has been defined by a single, lifelong conviction: that healing is not an individual act but a human one.
Over decades of frontline work with foster youth, vulnerable families, and the professionals and organizations committed to supporting them, Piraino developed a deeply integrated understanding of how trauma shapes human development — and how connection, meaning, and the brain's remarkable capacity for change open the pathway back to wholeness.
His work has taken him across the United States and internationally, building the relationships, programs, and advocacy frameworks that have supported some of the most vulnerable young people in the country. He has trained professionals, led organizations, and spoken at conferences and institutions where the science of healing and the practice of compassionate care intersect.
Other People is his memoir — and his most personal and most urgent contribution to the conversation about what it truly means to recover, to connect, and to live with intention, curiosity, and the specific, hard-won wisdom of someone who has spent a lifetime listening to the stories of others and allowing those stories to reshape his own.
He lives on Bainbridge Island, Washington, where he continues to write, photograph, and practice the art of slow listening.
