I was born Nelson Harlin Conway Jr. in Las Vegas Nevada, the son and namesake of the man in my book, 'Las Vegas Inc.' Las Vegas was a very small town situated in the middle of a sweltering desert in the 1950s and 1960s where gambling was legal, the Mob was trying to build a skimming empire and where my father worked for and invested in the casino resorts that were being built all over the Las Vegas Strip and downtown. It was certainly a unique environment but, since I didn’t know any other, I took those experiences of my youth pretty much for granted.
I enjoyed a rather sheltered, privileged life as a youth in Las Vegas. I was known first and foremost as one of my father’s sons. Being the youngest of seven children in a blended family, I don’t think I experienced the kind of attention and scrutiny that my older brothers and sister had received. I often flew under the radar, so to speak, and at times thought of myself more like the family mascot than anything else, whatever that might imply.
I went to a wonderful small liberal arts college in Denver, Colorado called Loretto Heights. It was an outstanding educational experience where I studied choral arts and theater and spent the following 45 years in public schools and community theater organizations both as a choral conductor and musical theater director. One of the highlights of my life was founding the Venue Theatre in 2013, a community theater in Conifer, Colorado that is dedicated to developing performance skills of students from elementary age through high school. Throughout it all, however, I have been a life-long writer, creating short science fiction stories, novellas and even a screenplay or two.
I am now retired to the gorgeous mountain community of Conifer outside Denver Colorado with my wife Sandy and numerous children and grandchildren who live in the Denver area. I am blessed to be able to take in a backyard view that extends South from Pike’s Peak through Staunton Park then north to Mount Blue Sky (once named Mount Evans) and ending at Long’s Peak. In these later years, I have turned my interest to writing about that unique period of time where the local businessmen in early Las Vegas were just trying to make an honest living in the midst of a Mobbed-up gambling industry, and where my father played a pivotal role in both the life of Las Vegas as well as helping to eventually remove organized crime from the Vegas Valley. When not at home, I love to travel or camp at any of the wonderful lakes in the Colorado Mountains. Life is good.
