From Nick; In 2007 I found out I was sick... very sick! I suffered from an advanced illness that was also effecting many of my friends, coworkers, and industry counterparts. I have since self-diagnosed my illness Acute Stage 4 EGO. And honestly it nearly destroyed me.
For years, I went to "work" the phone rang, I answered, took the order ( I want to buy, or I want to sell), fulfilled the order (some of the time), and cashed the commission check. The commission checks keep coming and I was on top of the world. This issue or illness affecting me was most of this business was due to the market conditions and not MY efforts. Although, I took absolute credit for my "success", I was doing little to nothing to outpace the market. My approach, work ethic, marketing, and service we very "Me too". I was just like nearly every other agent in my market and across the country.
When the market shifted, everyone was affected. Those of us on the Me too rollercoaster realized very quickly, as the car sped toward an unseeable bottom, we were not in control, we had no way to slowdown the plummeting descent or control when the ride stopped. When it did finally stop, the chaos was palpable and all around us.
After nearly a year of complaining, blaming and feeling sorry for myself, I had an epiphany... I can't control the market, but I CAN control my ego, action, effort, and differentiation. Was I cured of my career threatening affliction of Ego? Not entirely, however I now knew I was sick and needed put my business on life support.
Since then I have made it my mission to help Realtors and mortgage professionals avoid the Ego affliction through Mindset, Methods and Metrics.
