I grew up in a typical blue-collar family, first in the Midwest and later in New England. As a kid I dreamed of being in a band, playing professional baseball, and traveling the world, but by all appearances my life seemed destined to be ordinary. I went through high school and prep school like most kids—had friends, played sports, got into a little trouble, and did just well enough in school. Everything felt predetermined by the expectations of society.
