Paul R Merry is a British writer and author of Quietus, a psychological thriller introducing Isaac Rook. Before writing fiction, growing up in Essex by the coast, Paul trained as a professional chef and worked in Michelin-starred kitchens before moving into a career in strategic consultancy. It is an unusual route into writing, but one that has given him a lifelong fascination with people, pressure, behaviour and the systems we build to create order around us.
Paul is also a published Photographer, having exhibited at the British Maritime Museum in a ten year exhibition, ironically focused on life , living by the coast of England, his work also appears in several books and publications.
Quietus grew from a darker question: what happens when those systems of control are understood by someone prepared to use them for an entirely different purpose?
Set against the stark landscapes of the English cost, the novel explores disappearance, confinement, identity and the uncomfortable boundary between protecting people and controlling them.
Paul lives within the National Forest, Derbyshire with his wife Gayle. When he isn't consulting or writing, he can usually be found behind a camera, cooking or on the coast wondering why perfectly pleasant places always look better when something terrible might have happened there.
He is currently working on his next novel
