Robert Collins went to school in Hertfordshire, but spent a large part of his evenings, weekends and holidays in Narnia, Earthsea and the parts of the galactic empire that were better known in the nineteen-sixties and seventies. Reluctant to grow up, he devoted his early twenties to writing a bad novel (unpublished), and then went to work for the Queen, helping to prosecute people as a law clerk in the CPS. Later he became a technical writer and—well, you know those incomprehensible and useless quick start guides that come with your television and washing machine (or used to, anyway)?
