Rosemarie Birri D’Alessandro has been a children’s and victims’ rights advocate since she started a movement in 1993 to keep the killer of her seven-year-old child, Joan, in prison.
She is the founder of the Joan Angela D’Alessandro Foundation that has helped thousands of neglected, abused, and disadvantaged children. Rosemarie was the driving force behind the successful passage of five laws on the federal and state level.
Her advocacy work has received national, state, and county recognition. In 2004, she was presented with the Special Courage Award from the Department of Justice, and on April 22, 2019, she was awarded the New Jersey Women of Achievement Award. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office honored her on September 7, 2021, by naming the Child Advocacy Center “Rosemarie’s Room.” Referring to her advocacy work, she said, “It starts with Joan. She’s my inspiration. However, it’s not just about Joan, it’s about all children.”
A graduate of Hunter College in New York City, she received a fellowship and pursued a master’s in special education at Fordham University and taught in the field for a short time before getting married and raising five children.
She is a member of the Hackensack University medical center Patient Family Advisory Council. Rosemarie enjoys nature, flower gardens, connecting with people, art, audiobooks, and being carefree while dancing to music. She has always been interested in social justice, and she developed an interest in public speaking during her years of advocacy work. She is a spiritual person, and her faith has always given her strength.
