Shantel Comminie Octave was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and raised in Edgard, Louisiana. Her love for books developed at a very young age, and her second-grade teacher predicted that she would be a writer one day. Shantel graduated from West St. John High School in Edgard as the class Valedictorian and attended Louisiana Tech University, from which she graduated with a degree in Political Science. She eventually earned a Juris Doctorate from Loyola University New Orleans. She practiced law for about 8 years, primarily focusing on criminal and juvenile law. Shantel realized a career change was warranted and went on to earn two Master's degrees in Education (Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Leadership) from Western Governors University. She is married to Shannon Octave, and they have two sons.
