Dr. Susanna Søberg is a Danish metabolic scientist and the researcher behind the Søberg Principle — the evidence-based protocol for cold and heat exposure that Professor Andrew Huberman of Stanford University named after her following her landmark research. Her 2021 study published in Cell Reports Medicine showed that combining cold water immersion with sauna in a precise sequence, ending on cold and allowing the body to rewarm naturally, produces significantly greater brown fat activation and metabolic benefit than either exposure alone. The study established minimum weekly doses of 11 minutes of cold and 57 minutes of heat that produce measurable improvements in metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and brown fat thermogenesis. It is the most cited dose-response study in the cold and heat exposure field, and the foundation for the Søberg Principle: do not interrupt what the body started. Allow the biological cycle to complete. She earned her PhD at the University of Copenhagen, where she spent over a decade designing and conducting clinical studies on metabolism and thermal physiology. She is the author of Winter Swimming: The Nordic Way Towards a Healthier and Happier Life, published in 14 languages, and the founder of Thermalist®, a global contrast therapy platform with over 250 certified instructors operating across 25 countries. Her work has been featured on the Huberman Lab Podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, The Lex Fridman Podcast, The New York Times, The Times, The Guardian, and the BBC. She speaks regularly at the Global Wellness Summit, FIBO, and the Eudēmonia Summit. Her second book, The Stress Fix — the science of why your body was built to recover, and what modern life removed — is forthcoming.
