About Tanya Hilson
My name is Tanya, and to simply put it, I love writing and the joy of storytelling. My passion for writing began at a young age and has followed me throughout my life. Never in a million years did I think I’d be writing screenplays, stage plays, television pilots, or children’s books—especially while living with dyslexia and ADHD. Yet writing has always been both humbling and therapeutic for me, and sharing my stories with others brings me joy.
I’m a proud mother and grandmother to a beautiful granddaughter. At my core, I’m a passionate humanitarian. I founded a nonprofit called WeLiveOn2, which supports low-income families by teaching computer literacy and job readiness skills, while also helping individuals who were previously incarcerated find employment. One of our special programs, Sandwiches on Wheels, provides meals to the homeless throughout the Chicagoland area.
As an author, I’ve written several books, including Back Porch Neighbors, Back Porch Secrets, Ruby’s Diner, Human Collateral, Shadow Eyes, Shadow Eyes 2: Where’s My Child?, John’s Hidden Truth, My Cousin Sue, and If I Were President. My screenplay Ruby’s Diner has earned international recognition, winning awards at the New York International Screenplay Awards, the California Women’s Film Festival, and the Screenwriting Sage Competition.
Beyond writing and service, I treasure quality time with family and friends. I also enjoy cooking, playing cards, watching movies, and even diving into a good video game.
My personal motto is:
“Never give up on a dream, for others cannot dream for you.”
