Thomas Patrick Nolan has spent much of his life telling stories. For more than forty years, he had the privilege of telling them from the pulpits of United Methodist churches throughout West Virginia. Now, in retirement, he continues telling them through his writing.
A graduate of Duke Divinity School, Thomas has always believed that some of the best sermons begin with a good story—and that the best stories have a way of revealing something about God, ourselves, and the wonderful mystery of grace. His preaching and writing are filled with ordinary people, unexpected encounters, moments of laughter, and occasional tears. He believes that God has a remarkable habit of showing up in places where we least expect to find him.
Since 2000, Thomas has been a Benedictine Oblate of Saint Meinrad Archabbey in southern Indiana, a spiritual home that has profoundly shaped his life. The Benedictine emphasis on prayer, humility, hospitality, and finding God in the ordinary has become an important part of both his faith and his writing.
He is the author of Between a Rock and a Holy Place and From Water and Stone, a collection of thirty-six sermons about faith, hope, love, and the surprising ways God’s grace finds us.
Thomas lives in Huntington, West Virginia, with his wife, Ann. He loves music, good books, a well-told story, and the quiet beauty of Benedictine prayer. He also happens to believe that laughter and holiness are much better companions than some people might imagine.
Above all, he hopes that something in his writing will help readers discover what he has spent a lifetime trying to proclaim: that we are loved by God, more deeply and more wonderfully than we can possibly imagine.
