Timothy Shanahan is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is a former director of reading for the Chicago Public Schools. He served on the board of the National Institute for Literacy under Presidents George W. Bush and Barak Obama. He was elected to the Reading Hall of Fame in 2007, and he is a former first-grade teacher. When not focused on the teaching of literacy, he is engaged in adventuring. So far, he has ridden his bicycle from Minneapolis to Chicago (500 miles), run the Chicago Marathon, climbed to Base Camp at Mount Everest, hiked to rim-to-rim across the Grand Canyon, safaried on the Serengeti, climbed the Inca Trail to Machu Pichu, collected the autographs of all U.S. presidents, and watched a baseball game at all current major league ballparks.
