Waldemar Fontes (1959) was born in Las Piedras, a city near Montevideo, Uruguay. He is a teacher, retired military officer, and Antarctic explorer. He participated in UN peacekeeping missions in Africa and served as a base commander in Antarctica. As a writer, he received the Annual Literature Award of Uruguay in 2011. Since 1992, he has published children's stories, and since 2006, he has written articles on Antarctic history, science, and environmental protection.
