I’m Zoe, a thriller and horror author from Oxford, UK.
I started my writing career in the rom-com genre seven years ago, when my debut novel Perfect Match was released by HarperCollins. I went on to write three more rom-coms for the publisher, before my first thriller, Pretty Evil, was released with an indie press in 2020.
Despite writing romantic comedies, my reading tastes have always been varied and often very dark. American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis was a huge influence on me from around the age of fifteen, and he remains one of my favourite novelists.
During a trip to New York for Fashion Week, I had the idea for a novel about a female Patrick Bateman-type character. What emerged was a fashion magazine editor, similar to Miranda Priestly, who moonlights as a serial killer.
The MeToo movement was in full swing at the time, so I turned the character into a vigilante targeting bad men, a kind of Dexter figure.
I named her Camilla Black. Camilla hunts down men using Tinder, hiding behind her femininity and prettiness to lure them into a false sense of security before delivering the justice she believes they deserve.
Pretty Evil was at the forefront of the now hugely popular “killer of bad men” genre. The Independent described it as “the ultimate revenge story,” and the Daily Express called it a “unique, modern and compelling read.”
My second thriller, Someone’s Watching Me (2023), is a suburban noir psychological thriller about a woman whose life unravels when a strange man moves in next door.
More recently, I have been writing novellas. My first, Courier (January 2024), follows a creepy delivery driver called Bob who becomes obsessed with a woman on his route. It is often compared to You by Caroline Kepnes, but much grittier.
My second novella, All Expenses Paid, is a dark horror about two influencers invited on a luxury trip that takes a sinister turn. It is intense, unsettling, and will appeal to fans of the Hostel films.
My latest release is Something Bad Happened Here, about a woman who does not believe in ghosts or bad energy and moves into a house with a deeply disturbing past. It was inspired by the real-life case known as “The Monster of Worcester.”
