すると向こうからお釈迦様が歩いてくるのが見えたので、卑しい身分の自分を恥じた尼提は横道に入ることにした。
しかし、曲がった道の向こうにはまたお釈迦様がいて、こちらに向かってくる。
何度避けても目の前にお釈迦様が現れるので、驚いた尼提はとうとう瓦器を落としてしまった。
お釈迦様は、こぼした糞尿の中にひざまずく尼提に向かって、出家をするようにと言う。
尼提は、自分が卑しい身分であることを理由に断るが、お釈迦様は身分の差などないと言うのだった。
仏典を題材とした芥川龍之介の短編小説。
芥川龍之介（あくたがわ・りゅうのすけ）
大正期の小説家。1892年東京都生まれ。東大卒。乳児期から母方の実家で育てられた。
東京帝国大学在学中の1916年に第四次「新思潮」創刊号に発表した「鼻」が夏目漱石に絶賛され
文壇にデビューする。初期の古典を材料にした「羅生門」「芋粥」「地獄変」などの名作を経て、「点鬼簿」「歯車」など自己の周辺にテーマを得た作品に移行。
様々なトラブルで心身とも衰弱し、1927年に自殺して36歳の若さでこの世を去る。
没後、親友である菊池寛によって、芥川賞が創設された。
