ある日うるがんは、南蛮寺の門の前で、姫君の乗っている輿の上に１匹の悪魔が座っているのに気付いた。
姫君が魅入られてしまっては大変だと思い、十字架を使って悪魔を捕まえると、なぜ輿の上に座っていたのか厳しく問いただす。
すると悪魔は「姫君の清らかな魂を見ていると、陥落させたい気持ちと穢すことはできないという気持ちの間で迷ってしまう。
昔見た天国の光と、今いる地獄の暗闇が私の中で混ざり合っているようだ。」と言って涙を流すのだった。
人間の矛盾した心の動きを、美しい顔をした悪魔の迷いに重ね合わせた味わい深い短編小説。
芥川龍之介（あくたがわ・りゅうのすけ）
大正期の小説家。1892年東京都生まれ。東大卒。乳児期から母方の実家で育てられた。
東京帝国大学在学中の1916年に第四次「新思潮」創刊号に発表した「鼻」が夏目漱石に絶賛され
文壇にデビューする。初期の古典を材料にした「羅生門」「芋粥」「地獄変」などの名作を経て、「点鬼簿」「歯車」など自己の周辺にテーマを得た作品に移行。
様々なトラブルで心身とも衰弱し、1927年に自殺して36歳の若さでこの世を去る。
没後、親友である菊池寛によって、芥川賞が創設された。
