小説家の大江匡は、小説『失踪』の案を練っていた。「主人公である種田順平は英語教員で、51歳の春に教職を退き、退職金を受け取ったその日に行方をくらましてしまう。
そして、かつて自分の家に女給として来ていたすみ子に偶然再会し、その女のアパートに一晩泊めてもらうことになった……」。大江匡は、小説の案を練りながら玉の井辺りを散策していたある日、お雪という女と出会う。
そしてその女のもとに足繁く通ううちに季節は移り変わり、やがて別れが訪れる……。大江匡は永井荷風自身であると考えられており、実際に玉の井に通っていたことが反映されたこの作品は、荷風の小説の中でも最高傑作と言われている。
タイトルは「隅田川東岸の物語」を意味しており、荷風のアイデアよって『濹東綺譚』と命名された。
