真夏の宿場で一匹の蝿が馬の背中に這い上がった。一人の農婦がやってきて、馬車はいつ出るかきく。
街に出た息子が死にかけていると知らせを受けたのだ。いつ馬車を出してくれるか農婦は泣き声できくが、
馭者は出るとだけ言い、いつ馬車を出すかは答えない。饅頭屋の店先で構わずずっと将棋を指している。
やがて若者と娘の二人連れがやってくる。娘は「知れたらどうしよう」と何か不安そうである。
宿場の場庭へ、母親に手を曳かれた男の子が入って来た。そして田舎紳士がやってきた。なかなか馬車は出ない。
馭者は饅頭が蒸し上がるのを待っていた。やっと馬車が出て、中で田舎紳士は饒舌に語り、男の子は外を見てる。
饅頭を食べた馭者は居眠りを始めた。
